DVD-Drive not showing up on Win 3.1 in VMWare Workstation

Post by Bluscream » Wed Nov 07, 2018 3:20 pm

Hello, i recently dug up some old games on my attic and people like Michael MJD gave me motivation to play them again. But for some reason my Windows 3.10 in VMWare Workstation 15.0.0 build-10134415 will not show any disk drives.

I tried
  • Mounting the ISO as drive in Windows 10 and mounting that virtual drive with VMWare
  • Mounting the ISO as IDE or SCSI drive witin VMWare directly (with both Legacy emulation enabled/disabled)
Can someone help me with this? :(

DVD drives are not supported until Windows 98

When in doubt, make an unofficial version of Windows XP!
When not in doubt, just mod some old Android benchmarks!
When between these states, archive and preserve software!

It can certainly be done

This was without effort using my special floppy image, it loads and seems to use the VIDE-CDD driver just fine without additional tweaks.
I also have GCDROM.SYS on there but from the startup messages i can tell VMWare did not actually present itself as a SATA drive in this test case.
So definately can be done, but may need some MSDOS cd drivers to function.

Another emulator that might help you is 86Box
