THIS!
I remember trying to get VMware Tools working on my Windows 95 VM, but it always get that same error. Even when I try to install it with older VMware Tools, it doesn't seem to work. I'm not sure if it's the VM's fault, since it's the only operating system that doesn't work well with VMware Tools, but somebody needs to fix the problem.

Re: Windows 95 VMware Tools
I had this issue. I found that you need to have Windows 95 OSR-2. After installing. You have to install VMware SVGA II drivers serprstly
Re: Windows 95 VMware Tools
Two solutions -
- If you must use versions earlier than OSR2, downgrade your virtual machine to version 5 (or the lowest version possible in VMware's Advanced New VM Wizard).
- Or else, install Windows 95 OSR2 or higher versions.
