YouTube and Spotify on G3 10.4

Post by ShinyElGhosteo » Tue Jan 31, 2017 4:02 am

Anyone know of any YouTube or Spotify clients that will work on Tiger on a G3? I've tried the official Spotify app that should be compatible but it bounces a few times and never opens. As for YouTube, I tried TenFourFox and it almost works but I've heard that it runs better outside a browser. I think I tried Miro but it didn't load YouTube videos, just videos from other sources.
Its a G3 400Mhz with 512mb Ram.

Just curious, what makes you think the official Spotify client will run? A quick search shows that apparently, as of 2015, the Spotify client requires at least 10.5 (Reddit thread here). They suggest trying the web client on TenFourFox, as well.

I'd check myself, but I'm being lazy and haven't finished installing 10.4 on my G3 (same specs, but I have 640 MB RAM, it also runs 9.2.1).

I can't speak for YouTube, though. Unfortunately, your Mac might not be able to run it, it could just be too slow. Also, I know around 2014, YouTube changed its API, my uncle's Smart TV from 2011 doesn't even work with it anymore. I wonder if the API change prevents people from loading YouTube videos from external apps. I think I've used YouView though, a long time ago when my G3 was still somewhat usable on the web, last update was 2015.

I don't remember which website I saw it from but I remember it being a pretty old version of it. Older than the one required to run on 10.5. Maybe it was just misinformation. I remember that YouTube change as well. It finally killed the old YouTube app on iOS 5 and below as well as the last version that ran on the original iPad. I just need to figure out what to do with this iMac because I just like it so much.

I know how you feel, I want to find a good use for my PowerMac G3 Blue and White, but right now it's just sitting in the corner of my living room, looking pretty. :D I thought of reusing the case for my current desktop, but it just feels wrong.

This site has the link to the last official version of Spotify that will work on a PowerPC Mac, but it requires a G4 or G5. As far as YouTube goes, I think you're plain out of luck. My G4 PowerBook struggles with 360p locally stored video, and I can imagine just how much worse the experience would be on a G3. Here's the link, in case you get a G4: http://www.powerpcsoftware.com/
My main systems:
Core 2 Duo E8400 Gaming Rig
1.33GHz PowerBook G4 12"
HP Pavilion G6
PowerMac G4 MDD 1.0GHz (X1)

Another site to look at, if you're looking for software to run on your G3 in general, is http://macintoshgarden.org/. Most of their software is for OS 9, but maybe you could at least find some old games or something to run on it.

Like Fociec said, your best bet for YouTube is VLC. I'll honestly be impressed if you can hit 320p on a G3 though.

As to Spotify, you're probably out of luck, the Spotify client is years old and long unsupported at this point. If it doesn't work, it's probably because the backend has changed in some way, but it could also be that your G3 simply isn't powerful enough to rock the last PPC version of the client, which would have been written with G4s and up in mind.

I don't think you can do much with Youtube and Spotify.
Youtube because of the streaming and it's graphical 'packages' (if you can call it like that) makes it nearly impossible to run on old computers, imagine in your G3 and Spotify, well....I dont even need to tell you.

Even 6 or 7 year old computers struggle with Youtube and Spotify, and Spotify isn't even compatible.
For the sake of explanation, The 8-Bit Guy made a video testing all those sorts of things except for Spotfy on a PowerMac G5 and i can say that it the case of streaming it didn't went well and that video is 2 years old, before Youtube introduced the new design and it's new 'graphics', so you are out of luck.

The most that you could try is playing music and videos locally on your hard drive with a player like VLC that runs well on old computers or if you REALLY REALLY want streaming, stream it locally from a home server with services like Plex or Serviio (i actually prefer Serviio but it's something up to you)

Here's the video.
Sorry :(
