Upgrade to Windows 7. I would stay stick with Vista, if you already had it (the performance is identical!) except for the fact that in a few months, Vista will no longer have even extended support. (in April 2017) So, upgrade to Windows 7, in which case you will have support until January 2020. Windows 7 is still fairly well supported.

However, another viable option is Windows Embedded POSReady 2009. It is basically Windows XP, but still gets security updates until April 2019. However, if you are keen on doing workarounds, look at MJD7999's video on surviving with Windows XP, which has a link to an article about patching Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP to use Windows Embedded 2009 updates, which are compatible. In that case, DO NOT USE Windows XP. Instead, use Windows Server 2003 which is a BIT faster and a BIT more stable but that bit could help you a lot over time.

What I recommend is using a stripped-down, light copy of Windows 7. Now you can find these scattering around the internet but they are usually pre-activated therefore it would be counterfeiting. Since I have a genuine Windows 7 Ultimate key, I was able to use that. Anyway, I've noticed that lighter copies of Windows 7 or even Windows 8.1 tend to boot up really fast and overall snappier than normal. I have a light copy of Windows 8.1 running on my old tower that only has a 2GB DDR2 RAM and the computer booted in just 15 seconds, and that's on a HDD. But like I mentioned before, it's not easy finding a good and safe copy of these so you would be better of using a program such as N-Lite to strip Windows ISOs down.

use posready 2009 or tiny7.
posready 2009 is xp supported till 2019.
tiny 7 is a modified version of windows 7 that runs better.
if you want official you could use windows 7 starter but its still harder to run then the other two.
i think michael (mjd7999) also made a video on tiny 7.
you could also use react os if you are fine with unofficial.
react os is an os that is based on server 2003 and still has support.
it also runs most windows apps that run on xp.
some games dont work with sound though.

hope i helped,

Daniel

Use 7 if you must be able to use modern apps or 64-bit apps, such as those by Adobe, or modern versions of Office (2013/16), etc. Otherwise, stick with XP for better performance. :)

I Would Use https://docs.google.com/uc?id=0B90KUTcF ... t=download

If only there was one for Windows 7, then I might try to get an older laptop from the 2000s.
