Hi! Today I'm going to show you how to get Windows 3.1 on your computer!!!
What you need:
VMware Workstation, or Player (Anything related to VMware, or virtual machines can also work)
Windows 3.1 OEM Floppy Disks. (7 disks) (The 7th might not be used) winworldpc.com
MS-DOS 6.22 Floppy Disks: (winworldpc.com)
File Extractor (I recommend 7-zip)
Once you extract, and put the files somewhere, let's start!
Step 1: Setting up the Virtual Machine (I will be using Vmware Workstation Pro 12.5 for this example)
1.1: Select Typical
1.2: Select I will install the operating system later
1.3: Select Microsoft Windows -> Windows 3.1
1.4: Choose a name and location
1.5: Keep the HDD at 8GB and you can choose to Store or Split
1.6: Go to customize Hardware and do the following...
1.6.1: Add a floppy drive and do the following...
220.127.116.11: Say yes for administrator permissions
18.104.22.168: Select use a floppy image
22.214.171.124: Browse for Disk 1 of the MS-DOS 6.22 disk
126.96.36.199: Make sure it's checked where it will connect at power on
1.6.2: Hit close and finish.
Step 2: Setting up MS-DOS
2.1: Start up the VM
2.2: Press enter for every prompt and follow the instructions
2.3: Type a:
2.4: Put the Windows 3.1 Disk 1 in the Vm floppy drive
2.5: Type setup
Step 3: Installing Windows 3.1 (DOS Setup)
3.1: Press Enter, select Express Setup
3.2: Insert Disks 1-3
Step 4: Installing Windows 3.1 (GUI Setup)
4.1: Put in your name, and (OPTIONAL) your company, then select continue twice
4.2: Put in Disks 4-6
4.3: Press cancel to not install a printer
4.4: It might detect something that might need to be updated, or something like that, just click Continue
4.5: You can choose to Run, or Skip the tutorial.
4.6: Click Reboot, (MAKE SURE TO REMOVE ALL FLOPPY IMAGES FROM THE VIRTUAL FLOPPY DRIVE!!!!!)
4.7: Type WIN
CONGRATULATIONS!! Hopefully you have successfully installed Windows 3.1!!
