Programs such as WinToUSB or Rufus should allow you to install Windows onto an external drive.

Windows 7 is a very good OS in my opinion. It is fast, stable, good-looking, and worked well for its time. However, 8.1 is faster, more resource efficient, and has a WAY better file explorer. The only thing that makes 7 better is that it doesn't have a start menu that separates you from the desktop...

My favorite build of Windows 10 was 9841.
